Background

For a bit over a year now I’ve been tinkering away at a game that I came up for the idea of a while ago. I’ve mostly just done a little bit here and there when I get motivated or I want to try something in particular.

But now I’ve decided to try to get a bit more serious, or at least regular in working on it so I figured I’d put this dev log together to share what I’m doing, what I’ve learnt, and where I’m going with any friends or strangers that care to follow along.

The Concept

The elevator pitch for the game I’m working on is that you play as a time travelling bus driver named Bruce. Now, Bruce isn’t the brightest start in the sky but he heard that a couple of people really dislike this Hitler guy that was supposed to have lived a long time ago, so he hops in his bus and decides to take Hitler out. Trouble is, Bruce doesn’t actually have the foggiest clue when or where Hitler was from, so he’s just going around to random points in history and killing the most important people he can find until he eventually maybe comes across Hitler.

Progress to Date

The conceptual side of the game is a fair way along. I have a good idea of how it’s going to play, what the levels are going to look like, and some of the key story beats. Implementation wise I’m definetely in the early prototyping phase, with most of the work having gone into isolated mechanics with the intention of getting most of the core mechanics down before I start putting levels together. The players main abilities and control is majority completed, with the exception of the grappling mechanic (more on that in a future devlog) and I’m currently working on enemy design.

Next Steps

The immediate next steps will be to finalise the last couple of touches for the player’s main gameplay mechanics, and get a solid few of the basic enemies working enough that I can start to put together some level structures.

Also on the near future list is implementing a camera mode so I can more easily take pictures to include in this log.

I’ll be attempting to aim to complete a general progress update log about every two months, with more specific logs along the way focused on specific mechanics that I’ve implemented, such as the grappling mechanic, or the enemy ai, for instance.

Closing Remarks

I hope you’ll follow me along for the journey, the more of you that do, the more likely that I’ll actually stay motivated to continue working on the project.

Wish me luck!
